Obstacles to rural dental care State dental board stymies free care in remote villages

A team of volunteers from New York University traveled to two Interior villages last year and provided 120 dental treatment visits during five days.

However, the board failed to approve the visits planned for this year by the Arizona and NYU dental program. So far, the board has failed to explain its inaction.

The irony of this situation is that nationwide the American Dental Association has worked very hard to prevent solutions to the dramatic shortage of dental care in rural Alaska. One such solution that the ADA has opposed is the Alaska Dental Health Aide Therapist Initiative.
